Growing a Green Future


In this project, ILVO is involved in the objective to support the cultivation of new oilseed crops, as well as the use of products derived from them. Further research is planned into high quality oils such as hemp and other oils. As these vegetable oils are rich in health-promoting unsaturated fatty acids, they are considered to be interesting ingredients for the food industry.


The performance of different varieties of a number of oleaginous crops will be compared through the application of variety tests. Work will also continue on the development and optimisation of harvesting technology. Based on consistency, stability, taste and odour of these 'new' vegetable oils, ILVO will also make an evaluation of the recipes of food products containing the derived oils as an ingredient.


The food industry is constantly looking for new, healthy, natural, sustainable ingredients and products. In addition, these new crops can be of interest to the farmers/growers. The diversity of cultivated crops can be increased (= spreading risk) and the crop rotation can be optimised. Both factors can lead to more sustainable agri-food production.

Growing A Green Future is financed within the Interreg V programme Flanders-Netherlands, the cross-border cooperation programme with financial support from the European Regional Development Fund.". This project runs from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2019.
